around the net 19 (hey john, it’s friday)

First, a couple of quick links that may be of interest:

The biggest news in photography I can think of…the biggest news in photography in a long timequite some time…is the Worldwide Photo Walk being held this weekend. Scott Kelby (event creator and organizer) reported yesterday that over 7,000 photographers have signed up for the walks being held in what must be at least 100 cities. I’ll be at the Walk here in Cincinnati being led by David Ziser. The course will be beautiful, starting at Fountain Square in the heart of downtown and crossing the Ohio River into Northern Kentucky. In his Wednesday post on Digital Pro Talk, David spoke with Master Photo Walker Jeff Revell (the man who inspired Scott Kelby to create this worldwide event) for a little background information on the origins of Photo Walking.

The comments have been lively this week with many great suggestions (lots of feedback for “how many megapixels”, especially). In addition to the faithful longtime readers (thanks always, you know who you are) there have been quite a few new voices. It turns out that, overall, we seem to be pretty happy with the megapixel count of current cameras but there are a number of suggestions for camera makers to consider regarding other features. Tom pointed out the importance of dynamic range and that’s something worth examining very soon (hey, Tom, be sure to send a link to your Photon Phil explanation on DR). Feeling technical? I’d recommend Norman Koren’s site for those interested in a thorough, in-depth examination of dynamic range and digital tonality.

Ee Focusing Screen with Black Mask Crop

Expanded dynamic range is probably number one on my personal camera wish list, followed by a big, bright viewfinder. And a square crop option in that viewfinder sure would be nice, too. Calumet stocks the Canon Ee Focusing Screen with Black Mask Crop for the 5D for 4×5 and square compositions, which is an interesting option.

Hey, that’s it for another week. If you’re in the northern hemisphere have you noticed the sun getting lower in the sky? I sure have…I guess it’s all part of being a photographer. I’ll see you Monday with another video (or maybe I’ll see you tomorrow if you’re going to the Cincinnati Photo Walk). Have a great weekend!

I will be participating in my metro area’s photowalk for Scott Kelby’s event too. It got added in the last batch of cities, but looks to be close to being filled up. Sounds like it is going to be a fun event and I’m looking forward to meeting some other photo-enthusists in my area.

I’ll be photowalking in Philadelphia tomorrow and looking forward to seeing how massive a Flickr pool 7000 of us come up with!

Oh, man, I didn’t think about the Flickr pool…that’s a lot of digital info about to be uploaded!

Jim, thank you so much for another week of news and useful info, it’s very cool that you are doing this!

The photowalk was a lot of fun. We had great weather, met several new photography enthusists, and got some nice shots.

My full gallery is at http://taallyn.zenfolio.com/p558048949/

Most of those will be in the Flickr pool once the leader accepts them.

Nice looking gallery you got there Craig! What city did you do the walk in? I wish I could have done the photo walk here in Cincinnati, but when I found out about it it was already fully booked. Can’t wait to see the outcome! Jim, please post a link to the Cincinnati pool so I can see the pictures. Thanks in advance!

Wow, gorgeous photos / day / color, Craig. I really like your comments, they take it a step beyone beautiful photography.

Juan, I’ll have some video up in a couple days from the Cincinnati Photo Walk. David and LaDawn Ziser were GREAT hosts and went above and beyond to make it a fun walk and a good time. David is talking about a sequel, though, so we’ll get you in the next time.

Juan and Jim, thanks so much for the kind comments. We did have a beautiful day. I was worried that we would get that tropical storm coming up our way, but it stayed away and seemed to cleared away our typical summer haze. The high was in the mid-80s with low humidity and there was a nice wind that kept it feeling much cooler. Some rain the night before would have been nice as there was hardly any water going over the falls due to our draught.

Jim, they say a picture says a thousand words, but I like to think a few words can help focus those words into a better context. Maybe I should have been a photo-journalist. ;-)

I hope this could be the start of a photowalking community here. Guess we will just have to see what happens.

Thanks for the tip about the Photo Walk. I signed up at the last minute and went out Saturday morning to participate. I took my son (8) along with his point and shoot and we had a blast.

I’m a bit late getting to this. Friday was an odd day for me.

I kinda wish I had participated in the photo walk in Syracuse. I had other plans though. I celebrated my birthday this past weekend and hopefully, I’ll be ordering my 580ex II soon.

Thanks for the link to “Tonal Quality and Dynamic Range…” article. I’ll be printing that off for some leisurely reading.

BTW: Naturally, I’m a bit curious about the “hey john, it’s friday” part of your title.

A couple weeks ago you commented that “around the net” reminded you it was Friday, John. Just thought I’d work that into the title (feeling a bit random, I guess)!

Thanks for remembering me Jim! I remember that comment now.

You have a way of making your regulars feel appreciated here on your blog. It’s the reason I go for yours first in the morning!

Keep up the great work! Now that I’ll hopefully have my flash in hand soon, I’ll want to know the best way to use it on-camera. Perhaps we could sweet-talk you into throwing a video together with some helpful tips. :)
