tech update: NormMonkey on battle of the bulbs

2 May 2008 2 Comments

For the real tech lovers:

The recent DIYPhotography.net post on the very cool DIY Alex Spiderlight also pointed to my earlier battle of the bulbs shootout post, to illustrate some bulb options and comparisons for Alex Campagna’s creation. There have been technical questions raised about the spectrum of light delivered by the various bulbs and their ability to faithfully record color. I’m impressed by the questions asked of readers and this is where I admit the research exceeds my abilities (and there’s still a photo studio to run in between posts). When I want to do something color-critical I reach for my studio strobes, so this question never entered my mind.

Enter NormMonkey, who has been around since the beginning of prophotolife and carries the official VP tag. He picked up the ball and put together a very informative piece (including spectrographic analysis data) on the incandescent vs. compact flourescent. If you are looking for answers to the light spectrum question and accurate color reproduction, he’s the man.

Thanks, Norm, I owe you…what’s your beverage of choice?

Jim, thanks for the mention! I’ve added a follow-up post (http://www.gnurple.net/2008/05/03/cfl-vs-incandescent-wrap-up/) with info on strobe light spectra.

The question of beverages was a simple one before you added your clever Iced Tea Fund link at the top.

Before then my answer would have been, without hesitation, a cold Guinness to kick off an evening of relaxation.

Your Iced Tea bit, though, begs the question: which beverage fuels? At the office, a cup of coffee in the morning and of tea in the afternoon inspire me and drive me through the day.

Norm, this followup is great, I’ll specifically mention it in this Friday’s ‘around the net’. It really ties the whole bulb journey together. Because I use strobes for the vast majority of my work this really applies to what is done at the studio on a daily basis.

Hmmm, should I buy a new set of hot lights? And what the heck is up with the Kino Flos and new LED lights coming out on the market?

As for Guinness…many fond memories. Iced Tea, though, there’s my muse.
